Zırhlar, savaş sırasında toprakları savunmak için tasarlanmış askeri yapılar veya binalar ve aynı zamanda barış zamanında bir bölgede kuralı sağlamlaştırmak için kullanılıyordu. İnsanlar binlerce yıldır, giderek daha karmaşıklaşan çeşitli tasarımlarda savunmaya yönelik çalışmalar yapmışlardır. Terim Latince fortis ve facere'den türetilmiştir. Çok erken tarihten modern zamana dek duvarlar, şehirler sürekli değişen bir istila ve fethi dünyasında ayakta kalabilmek için bir gerekliliktir. Indus Vadisi Uygarlığındaki bazı yerleşimler, güçlendirilecek ilk şehirlerdi. Antik Yunanistan'da, Myken'in Yunanistan'da, Miken'in antik bölgesi gibi büyük taş duvarlar inşa edilmiştir. Bir Phrourion, askeri bir garnizon olarak kullanılan yapıların kuvvetlendirilmiş bir koleksiyonuydu ve Roma kastellumu veya ingiliz kale eşdeğerdir. Bu yapı çoğunlukla belirli yolları, geçitleri ve krallığa zararlı toprakları korumak için bir saat kulesi amacına hizmet etti. Gerçek bir kale daha küçük olsa da, bu yapılar sınır izlemek ve korumak için gerçek bir güçlü noktası yerine bir sınır muhafızı gibi davranıyordu.
