Grapheme
Bir yazı, konuşulan dillerin ses biçimlerine benzer şekilde, yazılı bir dilde semantik olarak ayırıcı en küçük birimdir. Bir yazı tek başına bir anlam taşıyamaz veya taşımayabilir ve tek bir sesli olabilir veya olmayabilir. Yazım biçimleri, alfabetik harfler, yazım harfleri, Çince karakterler, sayısal basamaklar, noktalama işaretleri ve dünyanın yazma sistemlerinden herhangi birinin bireysel sembollerini içerir. Grapheme kelimesi, Yunanca γράφω gráphua'dan ve fonem ile benzeşim içinde bulunan ve eMik birimlerin diğer isimlerinden türemiştir. Graphemlerin çalışmasına graphemik denir. Bir yazı bilgisayarda bir karaktere benzeyen soyut bir kavramdır. Glif, belirli bir yazı karakterinde, bu yazıyı temsil eden belirli bir şekildir. Örneğin, "Arapça bir rakam" soyut kavramı, Times New Roman ve Helvetica fontlarında iki farklı glifi olan bir yazı biçimidir.
