Bir tarihçi, geçmişi inceleyen ve yazan ve üzerinde otorite sayılan bir insandır. Tarihçiler, geçmiş olayların insan ırkıyla ilgili olarak sürekli, metodik anlatımı ve araştırmasıyla ilgilidir; hem de tüm tarihin zaman içindeki incelenmesi. Eğer birey, yazılı geçmişten önceki olaylarla ilgiliyse, birey, tarih öncesi tarihçi.
