Hiperestezi, duyunun uyaranlara karşı duyarlılığın anormal bir şekilde artmasıyla sonuçlanan bir durumdur. "Zararsız bir uyaran ağrı hissine neden olduğunda alana hiperestetik denir". Duyuların uyarısı, birinin duyduğu ses, birinin tadına bakan yiyecekler, birinin hissettiği dokular vb. Olabilir. Artan dokunma duyarlılığına "dokunsal hiperestezya" denir ve artan ses hassaslığına "işitsel hiperestezya" adı verilir. Dokunma hiperestezi, herpes zoster, periferik nöropati ve radikülopatiler gibi birçok nörolojik bozukluğun ortak bir semptomu olabilir. 1979'da ve sonra 1994'te Merskey, Bogduk, Noordenbos, Devor ve diğerleri, hipadestezi yerine, "diğer ağrı" anlamına gelen alodinya kavramını normalde ağrıya neden olmayan bir uyarandan kaynaklanan bir ağrı olarak tanımladılar.
