Bir ideoloji, kişinin amaçlarını, beklentilerini ve eylemlerini teşkil eden bilinçli ve bilinçdışı fikirler dizisidir. Bir ideoloji, birtakım felsefi eğilimlerde tartışılan, kapsamlı bir normatif vizyon, bazı şeylere bakmanın bir yolu ve / veya bir topluluğun hâkim sınıfının bu toplumun tüm üyelerine önerdiği bir takım fikirdir; bazı Marksistler ve Kritik teori hesapları. "Ideoloji" kavramı normatif olarak geniş bir fikir dizisini tanımlarken, bir ideoloji, dünya görüşü, hayali ve ontoloji gibi kavramlarda ifade edildiğinden daha az kapsar. İdeolojiler, kamusal konularda soyutlanmış anlam sistemidir ve böylece bu kavramı politikanın merkezine getirmektedir. Kapalı olarak, kamu ve özel hayat arasında ayrım yapan toplumlarda, her politik veya ekonomik eğilim açık bir düşünce sistemi olarak önerilmiş olsun olmasın bir ideolojiyi gerektirir.

Sözlükte ideologun ilk tanımı, belirli bir ideolojiyi, özellikle de politik bir teorisyeni destekleyen bir kişidir. İdeologun diğer tanımı, bir ideolojiyi veya ideolojileri araştıran bir kişidir. İdeolog da bir teorisyen veya vizyonerdir.
