Bu kavram bazı üyelerin bağımlı olduğu ve bazılarının bağımlı olmadığı bağımlı bir ilişkiden farklıdır. Bağımsız bir ilişki içerisinde, katılımcılar duygusal, ekonomik, ekolojik ve / veya ahlaki açıdan birbirlerine bağımlı ve birbirlerine karşı sorumlu olabilirler. İki veya daha fazla kooperatif özerk katılımcı arasında birbirine bağımlı bir ilişki ortaya çıkabilir. Bazı insanlar özgürlük veya bağımsızlığı nihai iyilik olarak savunuyor; diğerleri kişinin ailesine, topluluğuna ya da topluma olan bağlılığı ile aynı şeyi yapar.
