Tarihsel olarak Ispahan, Sepahan, Esfahan veya Hispahan olarak İngilizce olarak üretilen Isfahan, Tahran'ın yaklaşık 340 kilometresinde (211 mil) bulunan İran'da Isfahan Eyaletinin başkentidir. Tahran ve Meşhed'den sonra 1.583.609 nüfusu ile İran'ın üçüncü büyük şehri. Tahran'dan sonra İran'ın ikinci en kalabalık metropolitan bölgesi olan 2011 Nüfus Sayımı'nda Büyük İsfahan Bölgesi nüfusu 3.793.101'dir. Zarrinshahr, Fooladshahr ve Najafabad, Se-deh, Shahin-shahr, Mobarakeh, Falavarjan ve Charmahin şehirleri İsfahan'ın metropol kentidir. İsfahan, kuzey-güney ve doğu-batı rotalarının üstünde yer alır ve bir zamanlar dünyanın en büyük şehirlerinden biridir. Özellikle 16. yüzyılda Safavî hanedanı döneminde, 1050'den 1722'ye kadar gelişerek, tarihinin ikinci yılında Pers'in başkenti haline geldi. Bugün bile şehir, geçmişteki ihtişamını muhafaza etmektedir. Birçok güzel bulvarı, kapalı köprüleri, sarayları, camileri ve minareleri olan İslam mimarisi ile ünlüdür.
