Melodrama benzeyen dil, davranış veya olaylara melodramatik de denir. Bilimsel ve tarihsel müzikal bağlamlarda melodramlar, 18. ve 19. yüzyılların orkestra müziğinin veya şarkının eylemde eşlik ettiği bir drama olarak kullanılmıştır. Melodram, 18. yüzyıldan günümüze, sahnede, sinema ve televizyonda ve radyo formatlarında uygulanan bir drama tarzıdır. Stilin var olduğu uzun zaman aralığı nedeniyle, kesin bir tanım elde etmek zordur. Melodram terimi, terimin uygulandığı eserin inceliğe veya inceliğe sahip olmadığına işaret etmek için genellikle aşağılayıcı olarak kullanılır. Bu terim, Yunan meloları, müzikleri ve Fransız tahkimatlarından türetilen, 19. yüzyılın başlarında Fransız mélodrame kelimesinden geldi.
