Modernleşme teorisi, toplumlardaki modernleşme sürecini açıklamak için kullanılan bir teoridir. Modernleşme, bir 'ön-modern' veya 'geleneksel' toplumdan 'modern' bir topluma ilerici bir geçiş modelini ifade eder. Teori, bir ülkenin iç faktörlerine bakarken, "geleneksel" ülkelerin daha gelişmiş ülkelerde olduğu gibi gelişimine yardımcı olabileceğini varsayıyor. Modernleşme teorisi, sosyalist ve serbest piyasa ideolojileri, dünya sistemleri kuramcıları, küreselleşme teorisyenleri ve bağımlılık kuramcıları arasında başlayan eleştirilere tabidir. Modernleşme teorisi yalnızca değişim sürecini değil aynı zamanda bu değişime olan tepkileri de vurgular. Sosyal ve kültürel yapılara ve yeni teknolojilerin adaptasyonuna atıfta bulunarak iç dinamiklere de bakar. Çin de dahil olmak üzere bazı ülkeler, modernleşmeyi hızlı bir gelişim için bir rehber olarak görüyorlar.
