Pelajik bölge
Denizin veya gölün altına veya sahile yakın olmayan herhangi bir suyun pelajik bölgede olduğu söylenebilir. Pelajik kelimesi, "açık deniz" anlamına gelen Eski Yunanca πέλαγος kaynaklıdır. Pelajik bölge, denizin yüzeyinden neredeyse dibine kadar uzanan hayali bir silindir ya da su sütunu açısından düşünülebilir. Koşullar su sütununda derinleşiyor; basınç artar, sıcaklık düşer ve daha az ışık olur. Derine bağlı olarak, su sütunu, daha çok Dünya'nın atmosferi gibi farklı katmanlara ayrılabilir. Pelajik bölge 1,330 milyon metreküp, ortalama derinliği 3,68 kilometre, maksimum derinliği 11 kilometredir. Pelajik bölgede yaşayan balıklara pelajik balık denir. Pelajik yaşam derinlik arttıkça azalır. Işık yoğunluğu, basınç, sıcaklık, tuzluluk, çözünmüş oksijen ve besin maddeleri ve denizaltı topoğrafyasından etkilenir. Derin suda, pelajik bölge bazen açık okyanus zonu olarak adlandırılır ve sahil yakınında veya kıta sahanlığında bulunan suyla karşılaştırılabilir.
