"Felsefe" kelimesi, kelimenin tam anlamıyla "bilgelik sevgisi" anlamına gelen Eski Yunan φιλοσοφία'dan gelmektedir. "Filozof" ve "felsefe" terimlerinin girişi Yunan düşünür Pisagoralara atfedilmiştir.
