Hesaplamada düz metin, çok fazla işlem yapılmadan metin halinde okunabilen sıradan bir sıralı dosyanın içeriğidir. Düz metin, stil bilgilerinin bulunduğu biçimlendirilmiş metinden ve bazı bölümlerin ikili nesne olarak yorumlanması gereken "ikili dosyalar" dan farklıdır. Kodlama geleneksel olarak ASCII, ISO / IEC 646 gibi birçok türevinden biri veya bazen EBCDIC olmuştur. UTF-8 ve UTF-16 gibi Unicode tabanlı kodlamalar, 7 veya 8 bit kodlarla sınırlı eski ASCII türevlerini kademeli olarak değiştiriyor.
