ASTM tarafından kullanılan çanak çömleklerin tanımı "teknik, yapısal ve refrakter ürünler haricinde, kil oluşmuş, ateşlenmiş seramik ürünler" dir. Bazı arkeologlar, benzer süreçler ve benzeri malzemelerle yapılmış, ancak damarlar olmayan figürinler gibi seramik nesneleri hariç tutarak bu tanımdan farklı bir anlayış kullanmaktadır. Çanak Çömlek, Neolitik Çağ'a aittir. Çek Cumhuriyeti'nde bulunan Gravit kültürü Venus of Dolní Věstonice figürine benzeyen seramik objeler M.Ö. 29.000-25.000 yıllarına kadar uzanıyor ve Çin'in Kiangsi kentinde keşfedilen seramik gemileri, 20.000 BP'ye kadar uzanıyor.
