Bir öncül ya da önsezi, bir argüman iddialarının sonuca neden olacağı ya da bir sonuca hak vereceği iddiasıdır. Başka bir deyişle: bir öncül, bir şeylerin doğru olduğu varsayımını ifade eder. Mantıksal olarak, bir argüman, mülk olarak bilinen iki bildirge cümleciliği ve sonuç olarak bilinen bir başka bildirge niteliğindeki cezayı gerektirir. İki mekanın bu yapısı ve bir sonuç, temel tartışmacı yapıyı oluşturmaktadır.
