Raffia palmiyesi
Raffia avuç içi, Afrika'nın tropikal bölgelerinde, özellikle Madagaskar'da bulunan, yirmi tür palmiye cinsidir ve bir tür de Orta ve Güney Amerika'da görülür. 16 metreye kadar büyürler ve bitki krallığında en uzun olan yaprak sarmal yaprakları için dikkate değerdirler; R. regalis'in 25 metre uzunluğunda ve 3 metre genişliğindeki yaprakları bilinmektedir. Bitkiler ya monokarpiktir, bir kez çiçek açar ve sonra tohumların olgunlaşmasıyla ya da hapaksantinle ölürler, bireysel saplar meyve bittikten sonra ölür ancak kök sistemi canlı kalır ve yeni saplar gönderir.
