Elektriksel özdirenç, verilen bir malzemenin elektrik akımının akışına ne kadar güçlü bir şekilde karşı koyduğunu nicel bir biçimde özetleyen özünde bir özelliktir. Düşük direnç, kolayca elektrik yükünün hareket etmesine izin veren bir malzemeyi gösterir. Dirençlilik genellikle Yunan harfi ρ ile temsil edilir. Elektriksel direnç SI birimi ohm⋅metre olmasına rağmen ohm simetrik gibi diğer birimler de kullanılmaktadır. Bir örnek olarak, eğer 1 m x 1 m × 1 m katı küp malzeme iki karşıt yüzeye levha kontakları ve bu kontaklar arasındaki direnç 1 Ω ise, maddenin direnci 1 Ω⋅m'dir. Elektriksel iletkenlik veya özgül iletkenlik, elektrik direncinin karşılık gelenidir ve bir malzemenin bir elektrik akımı yürütme kabiliyetini ölçer. Genellikle Yunan harfi σ ile temsil edilir, ancak κ veya γ da ara sıra kullanılır. SI birimi, metre başına siemens ve CGSE birimi karşılıklı ikinci.
