Hizmet ekonomisi son iki ekonomik gelişmeden birine ya da her ikisine birden atıfta bulunabilir: ▪ Sanayileşmiş ekonomilerde hizmet sektörünün artan önemi. Fortune 500 şirketlerinin güncel listesi, önceki on yıllara kıyasla daha fazla hizmet şirketi ve daha az üretici içeriyor. ▪ Bir ürün sunumunda hizmetin göreli önemi. Gelişmekte olan ülkelerdeki hizmet ekonomisi çoğunlukla finansal hizmetler, misafirperverlik, perakende, sağlık, insan hizmetleri, bilgi teknolojisi ve eğitim alanlarında yoğunlaşmaktadır. Günümüzde kullanılan ürünler, önceki on yıllara göre daha yüksek bir servise sahiptir. Yönetim literatüründe buna ürünlerin servizasyonu denir. Hemen hemen her ürünün bugün bir hizmet bileşeni vardır. Ürün ve hizmet arasındaki eski ikilem, bir hizmet-ürün sürekliliği ile değiştirildi. Birçok ürün servislere dönüştürülüyor. Örneğin, IBM işini bir hizmet işi olarak görüyor. Halen bilgisayar üretmekle birlikte, fiziksel malları "iş çözümleri" endüstrisinin küçük bir parçası olarak görüyor. "İş çözümleri" için talebin fiyat esnekliğinin donanımdan çok daha az olduğunu tespit ettiler.
