Dolayısıyla sosyalleşme 'sosyal ve kültürel sürekliliğin sağlandığı araçtır'. Toplumsallaşma, sözü edilen toplum görüşünde arzu edilen veya 'ahlaki' sonuçlar doğurabilecek bir süreci anlatmaktadır. Irk veya ekonomi gibi belirli konularda bireysel görüşler, toplumun genelindeki görüşten etkilenmekte ve bir toplum içinde "normal" ve kabul edilebilir bir görünüm veya değer haline gelmektedir. Birçok sosyo-politik kuramlar, toplumsallaştırmanın insan inançları ve davranışları için yalnızca kısmi bir açıklama sağladığını varsayıyor ve bu da temsilcilerin çevreleriyle önceden belirlenmiş 'boş kayrak' olmadığını savunuyorlar.
