SOPHIST SÖZCÜĞÜ İNGILIZCE DİLİNDE NE ANLAMA GELİR?

Sofist, Eski Yunan'da ve Roma İmparatorluğunda belirli bir öğretmenlik yapıyordu. Birçok sofist, felsefe ve retorik araçlarını kullanmayı, diğer sofistler ise müzik, atletizm ve matematik gibi konuları öğretir. Genel olarak, ağırlıklı olarak genç devlet adamlarına ve soylulara arete öğretmeyi iddia ettiler. İlk sofistanlardan ve bunlar hakkında pek çok yazı bulunmamaktadır. İlk sofistlerin eğitime para yatırma ve sadece ödeyebilecekleri kişilere bilgelik sağlama uygulaması, Sokrates'in Diyaloglarında Platon'u kullanarak olduğu kadar Xenophon Memorabilia ve Aristo tarafından da kınanmasına yol açtı. James A. Herrick, "De Oratore'da, Cicero, filozofun Gorgias'daki sofistlere yönelik ünlü saldırılarında bilgeliği ve bilgeliği ayırt etmek için Platon'u sorumlu tutuyor" sözleriyle yazılmıştı.
