Fırtına otları, Procellariiformes düzeninin bir parçası olan Hydrobatidae familyasındaki deniz kuşlarıdır. Bu küçük deniz kuşları, planktonik kabuklulara ve küçük balıkların yüzeyden çekilmesine, genellikle gezinirken beslenirler. Uçuşları çırpınırken bazen de yarasa benzeri. Fırtına otları, tüm okyanuslarda bulunan kozmopolit bir dağılıma sahiptir. Sadece pelajiktirler, yalnızca yetiştirirken karaya çıkarlar. Çoğu türde, davranışlarında ve dağılımlarında, bulunmaları zor ve tespit edilemeyecek kadar az şey bilinir. Bunlar sömürge nesterler olup, doğum öncesi kolonilerinde ve yuvalama bölgelerinde güçlü felakete maruz kalmaktadırlar. Çoğu çatlak veya burrows içinde yuvalanır ve bir tür hariç tümü üreme kolonilerine noksturna katılırlar. Çiftler, uzun süreli tek eşlilik bağları oluşturur ve kuluçka ve piliç besleme görevlerini paylaşır. Pek çok deniz kuşu türü gibi, yuvalanma, kuluçka süresi 50 güne kadar yükselir ve bundan sonraki 70 gün sonra da süratle uzatılır. Fırtına kuşağının çeşitli türleri insan faaliyetleri tarafından tehdit altındadır.
