Tiroid hormonu
Tiroid hormonları triiodothyronin ve prohormonu olan tiroksin tiroit bezinin ürettiği tirozin esaslı hormondur ve esasen metabolizmanın düzenlenmesinden sorumludur. T3 ve T4'ün üretimi için iyot gerekir. İyodun eksikliği T3 ve T4 üretiminin azalmasına, tiroid dokusunu büyütmesine ve guatr hastalığına neden olur. Kandaki tiroid hormonunun başlıca formu, T3'den daha uzun yarı ömrüne sahip tiroksindir. T4'ün kana salınan T3'e oranı kabaca 20 ila 1'dir. T4, deiyodinazlar yoluyla hücrelerdeki aktif T3'e dönüştürülür. Bunlar iyodotiyronamin ve tironamin üretmek üzere dekarboksilasyon ve deiyodinasyon ile daha da işlenir. Deiyodinazların üç izoformu da selenyum içeren enzimlerdir, bu nedenle diyet selenyum T3 üretimi için gereklidir.
