Jakob von Uexküll ve Thomas A. Sebeok'un göstergebilim kuramlarında, "insan hayvanda hem iletişim hem de imkân çalışmasının çok merkez üssünde yer alan biyolojik temeller" umundur. Terim genellikle "öz merkezli dünya" olarak tercüme edilir. Uexküll, organizmaların aynı ortamı paylaşmalarına rağmen farklı organizmalara sahip olabileceği teorisini ortaya koydu. Umwelt ve Uexküll'in eserleri Dorion Sagan tarafından çevirilerin bir koleksiyonuna giriş bölümünde anlatılmıştır.
