Malnütrisyon, bazı besin maddelerinin eksik olduğu, aşırı olduğu veya yanlış oranlarda olduğu bir diyet sonucu ortaya çıkan bir durumdur. [1] [2] Fiil formu "kötü beslenme" dir; Bazen "kötü beslenme" yerine "yetersiz beslenme" kullanılır. Birkaç farklı beslenme bozukluğu ortaya çıkabilir, besinlerin diyette fazla veya bol miktarda bulunmasına bağlıdır. Yetersiz beslenme, yeterince kaloriz ve protein eksikliği olan bir diyetin sebep olduğu [3] [4] yeterli gıdada bulunmamaktadır ve kalitesizdir. Aşırı beslenme yetersizliktir ve belirtileri ve etkileri cansızdır. Kötü beslenme, az gelişmiş ülkelerde daha yaygın olmakla birlikte, sanayileşmiş ülkelerde de mevcuttur. Daha zengin ülkelerde aşırı enerji, yağ ve rafine karbonhidrat içeren sağlıksız beslenme kaynaklı olma ihtimali daha yüksektir. Artan bir şişmanlık eğilimi, düşük sosyo-ekonomik düzeylerde ve gelişmekte olan ülkelerde de halk sağlığı açısından büyük bir endişe oluşturmaktadır. [5] Dünya Sağlık Örgütü, açlık ve bununla ilişkili malnütrisyonu dünyadaki halk sağlığı için en büyük tek tehdit olarak bildirmiştir.
