Çalışma haftası ve hafta sonu sırasıyla iş ve dinlenme ayrımı yapan haftanın tamamlayıcı parçalarıdır. Yasal çalışma haftası veya çalışma haftası, yedi günlük haftanın emek ayrılığıdır. Pek çok Batılı ülkede Pazartesi-Cuma; hafta sonu cumartesi ve pazar da dahil olmak üzere bir dönemdir. Bazı insanlar hafta sonunu Cuma gecelerine de uzatır. Bazı Hıristiyan geleneklerinde Pazar, "Rab'bin Günü" ve dinlenme ve ibadet günüdür. Yahudi Şabat Günü veya İncil Sabbath Cumartesi günü karanlığın çökmesine dek gün batımından sonra İsrail'de bir Cuma-Cumartesi haftalığına kadar sürer. Müslüman çoğunluğa sahip ülkeler genellikle bir Perşembe-Cuma ya da cuma-cumartesi haftasonu var. Fransız Devrimci Takvimi, on günlük bir haftaya sahipti ve on günün birinde birinin dinlenme gününe izin veren décadi'ye izin verdi.
