Dilbilimde, bir sözcük, anlamsal ya da pragmatik içerikle izole edilebilecek en küçük öğedir. Bu, anlamın en küçük birimi olan, ancak kendi başına durmayacak bir morfem ile zıtlık içindedir. Bir sözcük, tek bir biçim bilgisinden veya birkaçından oluşabilir; oysa bir biçimbilgisi tek başına bir sözcük olarak duramaz. Karmaşık bir sözcük tipik olarak bir kök ve bir veya daha fazla ek içerir veya bir bileşiğe birden fazla kök içerir. Cümleler, cümleler ve cümleler gibi daha büyük dil öğelerini oluşturmak için sözcükler bir araya getirilebilir. Kelime terimi, konuşulan bir sözcükten veya yazılı bir sözcükten, bazen de arkasındaki soyut kavrama atıfta bulunabilir.
