Grog - Su ile seyreltilmiş rom veya diğer güçlü içecek; Tadı arttırmak için narenciye, tarçın, sıcak su veya şeker ekleyin. Yelkenli gemilerde denizcilere bir kere hizmet ettiler. Rom'un 17. yüzyıldaki popülaritesi Kraliyet Donanması'nı denizcilerin değiştirilmesinden önceki gün 1655'e getirdi. Zayıf ve çoğunlukla aşırı nüfusa sahip birayı güçlü alkol piminin yarısı ile değiştirmek, gemiadamlarının disiplini ve performansı üzerinde olumsuz bir etkiye sahipti. Ayrımcılığı önleme girişiminde, Amiral Yardımcı Edward Vernon, Rum oranını 21 Ağustos 1740'da çeyrek su ile karıştırmasını emretti. Bu alkollü denizciler tarafından daha sonra sarhoş olmak için aynı anda daha fazla su içtikleri "tiksinti" yi önlemek ve su içmek için teşvik etmekti. Pragnąc zapobiec rozprzężeniu, 21 sierpnia 1740 wiceadmirał Edward Vernon rozkazał podawać dotychczasową porcję rumu zmieszaną z kwartą wody. Miało to zapobiec "chomikowaniu" przez marynarzy alkoholu, wypijanego później w większej ilości naraz w celu upicia się, oraz skłonić ich do picia wody. Co jednak ważniejsze, do tak rozcieńczonego rumu dodawano cukru i soku z limonek. Marynarze nazwali nowy trunek grogiem na cześć admirała, który nosił przezwisko Old Grog ze względu na swój nieodłączny sztormiak uszyty z grogramu. Grog przyczynił się wydatnie do poprawy stanu zdrowia marynarzy.
