Інформація - це та інформація, яка повідомляє, тобто те, з яких даних можна отримати. Інформація передається як як зміст повідомлення, так і через пряме або непряме спостереження за деякою дією. Той, що сприймається, можна тлумачити як послання само по собі, і в цьому сенсі інформація завжди передавалася як зміст повідомлення. Інформація може бути закодована в різні форми для передачі та інтерпретації. Наприклад, інформація може бути закодована на знаки та передана через сигнали. У термодинаміці інформація - це будь-яка подія, яка впливає на стан динамічної системи, яка може інтерпретувати інформацію. Інформація вирішує невизначеність. Невизначеність події вимірюється його вірогідністю виникнення та обернено пропорційна цьому. Чим більше сумнівна подія, тим більше інформації потрібна для вирішення невизначеності цієї події. Біт є типовою одиницею інформації, але інші одиниці, такі як nat, можуть бути використані.
