Епіграфіка - це вивчення написів або епіграфів як написання; це наука про виявлення графем, уточнення їх значень, класифікація їх використання за датами та культурними контекстами, висновок про написання та письменників. Особливо виключені з епіграфіки - це історичне значення епіграфа як документа і художньої цінності літературного твору. Людина, яка використовує методи епіграфіки, називається епіграфом або епіграфістом. Наприклад, напис "Бехістун" є офіційним документом імперії Ахеменидів, вигравірованим на місцевому камені в Ірані. Епіграфісти несуть відповідальність за реконструкцію, переклад та ознайомлення трьохмовних написів та пошуку будь-яких відповідних обставин. Однак робота істориків полягає у визначенні та інтерпретації подій, записаних написом як документ. Часто епіграфіка та історія є компетенціями, які практикують одна і та ж людина. Епіграф - це будь-який текст, від єдиної графем до довгого документа. Епіграфіка перекриває інші компетенції, такі як нумізматика або палеографія. У порівнянні з книгами, більшість написів короткі.
