Шовінізм, в первісному значенні, є перебільшеним патріотизмом і воюючою вірою у національну перевагу та славу. Його епонімом є начебто апокрифічний французький солдат Ніколас Шовін, який був сильно поранений під час наполеонівських воєн. Він отримав пенсію за тілесні ушкодження, але цього було недостатньо, щоб жити. Після того як Наполеон відрекся від влади, Шовін був фанатичним бонапартистом, незважаючи на непопулярність цієї думки в Бурбон Реставрації Франції. Його однодумна сліпа відданість його справі, незважаючи на зневагу його фракцією та переслідування своїх ворогів, почала використовувати термін. Крім того, до неї входить екстремальний та необгрунтований партизанство від імені будь-якої групи, до якої він належить, особливо якщо партизанство включає злість та ненависть до конкуруючих груп.
