Терміни "онлайн" та "офлайн" мають особливі значення у галузі комп'ютерних технологій та телекомунікацій. Незважаючи на те, що загальне народне спілкування відноситься саме до підключення до Інтернету, загальне визначення "онлайн" просто вказує на стан з'єднання, тоді як "офлайн" вказує на відключений стан. Поняття, однак, розширилися від їх обчислювальної та телекомунікаційної смислів до сфери взаємодії та бесіди людини, такими, що навіть в автономному режимі можна використовувати, на відміну від загального використання в Інтернеті.
