Сприйняття
Сприйняття - це організація, ідентифікація та інтерпретація сенсорної інформації для представлення та розуміння навколишнього середовища. Вся сприйняття включає в себе сигнали в нервовій системі, які в свою чергу виникають в результаті фізичної чи хімічної стимуляції органів почуттів. Наприклад, бачення передбачає світло, що вражає сітківку ока, запах опосередковується молекулами запаху, а слух включає в себе тиск хвиль. Сприйняття - це не пасивний прийом цих сигналів, але формується шляхом навчання, пам'яті, очікування та уваги. Сприйняття передбачає ці ефекти "зверху вниз", а також "знизу-вгору" процес обробки сенсорного введення. "Низька вгору" обробка перетворює низькорівневу інформацію на більш високий рівень інформації. Обробка "зверху вниз" стосується концепції та очікувань людини, а також вибіркових механізмів, що впливають на сприйняття. Сприйняття залежить від складних функцій нервової системи, але суб'єктивно здається переважно нелегким, оскільки ця обробка відбувається за межі усвідомлення. З моменту виникнення експериментальної психології XIX століття розуміння сприйняття психологією прогресувало шляхом поєднання різних методів.
