У біології термін precocial відноситься до видів, в яких молоді відносно зрілі та рухливі з моменту народження чи вилуплення. Протилежна стратегія розвитку називається "альтрікальним", де молоді люди народжуються чи виявляються безпорадними. Дуже precocial види можна назвати "суперпрекоціальних". Ці три категорії утворюють континуум, без чітких прогалин між ними. Предсоціальні види, як правило, неоднозначні, тобто вони залишають гніздо незабаром після народження або вилуплення. Проміж між прекоалічними та альтрікальними видами особливо великий у птахів. Передкові птахи народжуються з відкритими очима. Вони покриті пухкими пір'ями, які незабаром перетворюються на дорослих пір'ях після вилуплення. Птахи такого роду також можуть плавати і бігти набагато швидше після їх народження, ніж інші птахи, такі як пісні птиці. Дуже precocial птахи можуть бути готові покинути гніздо протягом короткого періоду часу після вилуплення.
