Scriptorium, буквально "місце для написання", зазвичай використовується для позначення приміщення в середньовічних європейських монастирях, присвячених написанню, копіюванню та висвітленню рукописів монастирськими книжниками. Письмові звіти, вижили будівлі та археологічні розкопки показують, однак, що всупереч поширеній думці такі кімнати рідко існували: більшість монастирських творів було виконано в кабіну, як в монастирі, або в монашеских камерах. Посилання в сучасних наукових працях на "сценарії" частіше за все відносяться до колективного письмового висновку монастиря, а не до фізичної кімнати. Скрипторій був необхідним додатком до бібліотеки; де б була бібліотека, зазвичай можна припустити, що існує сценарій. Скрипторія в звичайному розумінні приміщення, призначеного для цілей, напевно існувало лише протягом обмежених періодів часу, коли установа чи особа хотіли, щоб велика кількість текстів копіювалась до фонду бібліотеки; коли бібліотека була запакована, додаткової потреби у призначеному приміщенні не було.
