Хімічне найменування вітаміну С, аскорбінова кислота, походить від латинського назви цинги, scorbutus, яка також надає прикметник scorbtic. Скарб був одним з обмежувальних факторів морських перевезень, часто забираючи велику кількість пасажирів та екіпажів на великі відстані.
