Кріпацтво - це статус селян під феодалізмом, зокрема стосовно манориалізму. Це був стан кабали, який розвинувся насамперед під час Середньовіччя в Європі і тривав у деяких країнах до середини 19 століття. Кріпаки, що займали ділянку землі, повинні були працювати для Господа садиби, який володіє цією землею, і натомість мали право на захист, правосуддя та право експлуатувати певні родовища в садибі, щоб зберегти власне існування. Кріпакам часто доводилося не лише працювати на полях пана, а й на його шахтах, лісах і дорогах. Садиба утворила основну одиницю феодального суспільства, і Владика садиби, а його кріпаки були пов'язані законно, економічно і соціально. Кріпаки формували найнижчий соціальний клас феодального суспільства. Зменшення кріпацтва в Західній Європі іноді було пов'язано з Чорною смертю, яка досягла Європи в 1347 році, хоча спад почався до цієї дати. Кріпацтво стало все більш рідкісним у більшості Західної Європи після епохи Відродження, але навпаки, він сильно посилювався у Центральній та Східній Європі, де це раніше було рідше.
