Сечовина або карбамід є органічною сполукою з хімічною формулою CO2. Молекула має дві групи -NH2, з'єднані карбонільною функціональною групою. Сечовина служить важливій ролі в метаболізмі азотвмісних сполук тваринами і є головним азотсодержащим речовиною в сечі ссавців. Це безбарвна тверда речовина без запаху, добре розчинна у воді та практично не токсична. Розчиняється у воді, вона не є кислотною або лужною. Сечовина також є важливою сировиною для хімічної промисловості. Відкриття Фрідріхом Вьолером у 1828 році, що мочевину можна виготовити з неорганічних вихідних речовин, було важливою концептуальною віхою в хімії, оскільки вперше вона показала, що речовина, яка раніше була відома лише як побічний продукт життя, могла бути синтезована в лабораторії без будь-яких біологічні вихідні речовини, що суперечить широко поширеній доктрині віталізму.
