Лак - це прозора, тверда захисна поверхня або плівка, яка використовується, головним чином, для обробки деревини, а також для інших матеріалів. Лак традиційно являє собою комбінацію оліфу, смоли, і розчину або розчинника. Лакофарбова обробка, як правило, глянсова, але може бути розроблена для отримання атласу або напівблискучого блиску з додаванням "флейтингових" засобів. Лак малий або не має кольору, прозорий і не має доданого пігменту, на відміну від фарб або древесних плям, які містять пігмент і в основному варіюються від непрозорих до напівпрозорих.
