缺氧发生在术后缺氧之后。缺氧有两大类型。 一种是手术后几小时主要与麻醉有关的缺氧，另一种是由手术引起的缺氧或与手术前肺功能不全相关的缺氧。 前者被认为是由于各种麻醉剂的作用引起的肺泡通气引起的外周气道闭塞，分泌物积聚和咳嗽反射减少。 后者是由于肺部并发症如手术本身或术后肺不张所致。 수술후저산소증 수술후에 저산소증이 생기는데 여기에는 2개의 큰 유형이 있다. 하나는 수술직후부터 수시간에 걸치는 주로 마취에 관련한 저산소증이고 또 하나는 수술에 의한 것, 또는 수술전의 폐기능 장애와 관련해서 생기는 저산소증이다. 전자는 각종 마취제의 효과에 의한 폐포저환기와 분비물의 축적, 기침반사의 저하 등에 따른 말초기도의 폐색에 따른 것으로 생각되고 있다. 후자는 수술자체나 수술후에 생긴 무기폐 등의 폐합병증에 의해서 야기되는 것이다.
