In den Bereichen Wissenschaft, Technik, Industrie und Statistik ist die Genauigkeit eines Messsystems der Grad der Nähe der Messungen einer Menge zu dem tatsächlichen Wert dieser Menge. Die Präzision eines Messsystems, bezogen auf die Reproduzierbarkeit und Wiederholbarkeit, ist der Grad, in dem wiederholte Messungen unter unveränderten Bedingungen die gleichen Ergebnisse zeigen. Ein Messsystem kann genau, aber nicht präzise, präzise, aber nicht genau, weder oder beide sein. Wenn zum Beispiel ein Experiment einen systematischen Fehler enthält, erhöht die Erhöhung der Probengröße im Allgemeinen die Präzision, verbessert aber nicht die Genauigkeit. Das Ergebnis wäre eine konsistente und dennoch ungenaue Folge von Ergebnissen aus dem fehlerhaften Experiment. Die Beseitigung des systematischen Fehlers verbessert die Genauigkeit, ändert aber nicht die Präzision. Ein Messsystem gilt als gültig, wenn es genau und präzise ist.
