Acid
Eine Säure ist eine chemische Substanz, deren wässrige Lösungen durch einen sauren Geschmack charakterisiert sind, die Fähigkeit, blaues Lackmusrot zu drehen, und die Fähigkeit, mit Basen und bestimmten Metallen zu reagieren, um Salze zu bilden. Wässrige Lösungen von Säuren haben einen pH-Wert von weniger als 7. Ein niedrigerer pH-Wert bedeutet eine höhere Säure und damit eine höhere Konzentration an Wasserstoffionen in der Lösung. Chemikalien oder Substanzen mit der Eigenschaft einer Säure werden als sauer bezeichnet. Übliche Beispiele für Säuren sind Salzsäure, Essigsäure, Schwefelsäure und Weinsäure. Wie diese Beispiele zeigen, können Säuren Lösungen oder reine Substanzen sein und können aus Feststoffen, Flüssigkeiten oder Gasen abgeleitet werden. Starke Säuren und einige konzentrierte schwache Säuren sind korrosiv, aber es gibt Ausnahmen wie Carborane und Borsäure. Es gibt drei gemeinsame Definitionen für Säuren: die Arrhenius-Definition, die Brønsted-Lowry-Definition und die Lewis-Definition. Die Arrhenius-Definition definiert Säuren als Substanzen, die die Konzentration von Wasserstoffionen oder genauer Hydroniumionen erhöhen, wenn sie in Wasser gelöst sind. Die Brønsted-Lowry-Definition ist eine Erweiterung: Eine Säure ist eine Substanz, die als Protonendonator wirken kann.
