Apocrypha sind Aussagen oder Ansprüche, die von zweifelhafter Echtheit sind. Der Ursprung des Wortes ist das mittelalterliche lateinische Adjektiv Apokryphen, "geheim oder nicht-kanonisch", aus dem griechischen Adjektiv ἀπόκρυφος, "obskure", aus verb ἀποκρύπτειν, "sich zu verstecken". Es wird gewöhnlich in christlichen religiösen Kontexten angewandt, die gewisse Meinungsverschiedenheiten über die biblische Kanonik beinhalten. Die vorchristliche Ära jüdische Übersetzung der heiligen Schriften, die als Septuaginta bekannt waren, schloß die Schriften in Streit ein. Allerdings war der jüdische Kanon nicht bis mindestens 100-200 Jahre in die A.D. abgeschlossen, zu welcher Zeit die Betrachtungen der griechischen Sprache und Anfänge der christlichen Akzeptanz der Septuaginta gegen einige der Texte wogten. Einige wurden von den Juden nicht als Teil des hebräischen Bibelkanons akzeptiert. Über mehrere Jahrhunderte der Betrachtung wurden die Bücher der Septuaginta schließlich in das christliche Alte Testament aufgenommen, von A.D. 405 im Westen und bis zum Ende des fünften Jahrhunderts im Osten.
