Ein Barcode ist eine optisch maschinell lesbare Darstellung von Daten, die sich auf das Objekt beziehen, an das es angeschlossen ist. Ursprünglich wurden Barcodes systematisch Daten durch Variieren der Breiten und Abstände von parallelen Linien dargestellt und können als linear oder eindimensional bezeichnet werden. Später entwickelten sie sich in Rechtecken, Punkten, Sechsecken und anderen geometrischen Mustern in zwei Dimensionen. Obwohl 2D-Systeme eine Vielzahl von Symbolen verwenden, werden sie im Allgemeinen auch als Barcodes bezeichnet. Barcodes wurden ursprünglich von speziellen optischen Scannern mit dem Namen Barcode-Leser gescannt. Später wurden Scanner und interpretative Software auf Geräten wie Desktop-Druckern und Smartphones verfügbar. Eine frühe Verwendung eines Barcode-Typs in einem industriellen Kontext wurde von der Vereinigung der amerikanischen Eisenbahnen in den späten 1960er Jahren gefördert. Entwickelt von General Telefon und Elektronik und KarTrak ACI genannt, beinhaltete dieses Schema die Platzierung von farbigen Streifen in verschiedenen Kombinationen auf Stahlplatten, die an den Seiten des Eisenbahnfahrzeugs befestigt waren.
