Vergleichbare Begriffe finden sich in außereuropäischen Zivilisationen, vor allem in China und Japan. Im römischen Reich nutzten die Römer das Wort "Barbar" für viele Menschen wie die Berber, Germanen, Kelten, Karthager, Iberer, Thraker und Perser.
