Die Katalyse ist die Erhöhung der Geschwindigkeit einer chemischen Reaktion eines oder mehrerer Reaktanten aufgrund der Beteiligung einer zusätzlichen Substanz, die als Katalysator bezeichnet wird. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Reagenzien in der chemischen Reaktion wird ein Katalysator nicht durch die Reaktion verbraucht. Bei einem Katalysator ist weniger freie Energie erforderlich, um den Übergangszustand zu erreichen, aber die gesamte freie Energie von Reaktanten zu Produkten ändert sich nicht. Ein Katalysator kann an mehreren chemischen Umwandlungen teilnehmen. Die Wirkung eines Katalysators kann aufgrund der Anwesenheit anderer Substanzen, die als Inhibitoren oder Gifte oder Promotoren bekannt sind, variieren. Das Gegenteil eines Katalysators, einer Substanz, die die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit reduziert, ist ein Inhibitor. Katalytische Reaktionen haben eine niedrigere Aktivierungsenergie als die entsprechende unkatalysierte Reaktion, was zu einer höheren Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit bei der gleichen Temperatur führt. Allerdings ist die mechanistische Erklärung der Katalyse komplex. Katalysatoren können die Reaktionsumgebung günstig beeinflussen oder an die Reagenzien binden, um Bindungen zu polarisieren, z.B.
