Tschad (Arabisch: تشاد Tšād; Französisch: Tchad i / tʃæd /), offiziell die Republik Tschad, ist ein Binnenland in Zentralafrika. Es grenzt an Libyen im Norden, Sudan im Osten, die Zentralafrikanische Republik im Süden, Kamerun und Nigeria im Südwesten und Niger im Westen. Tschad ist in mehrere Regionen aufgeteilt: eine Wüstenzone im Norden, ein trockener Sahelgürtel im Zentrum und eine fruchtbarere sudanesische Savannenzone im Süden. Der Tschad-See, nach dem das Land genannt wird, ist das größte Feuchtgebiet im Tschad und das zweitgrößte in Afrika. Tschads höchster Gipfel ist die Emi Koussi in der Sahara, und N'Djamena (früher Fort-Lamy), die Hauptstadt, ist die größte Stadt. Tschad ist die Heimat von über 200 verschiedenen ethnischen und sprachlichen Gruppen. Arabisch und Französisch sind die Amtssprachen. Islam und Christentum sind die am weitesten verbreiteten Religionen. Ab dem 7. Jahrtausend v.Chr. Zogen die menschlichen Populationen in großer Tafel in das Tschadische Becken. Am Ende des 1. Jahrtausends v.Chr. Stieg eine Reihe von Staaten und Reichen auf und fiel in den Sahel-Streifen des Tschads, jeder konzentrierte sich auf die Kontrolle der trans-Sahara-Handelswege, die durch die Region gingen.
