Klima
Das Klima ist ein Maß für das durchschnittliche Muster der Veränderung der Temperatur, der Feuchtigkeit, des atmosphärischen Drucks, des Windes, des Niederschlags, der atmosphärischen Teilchenzahl und anderer meteorologischer Variablen in einer bestimmten Region über lange Zeiträume. Das Klima unterscheidet sich von dem Wetter, in diesem Wetter beschreibt nur die kurzfristigen Bedingungen dieser Variablen in einer bestimmten Region. Das Klima der Region entsteht durch das Klimasystem mit fünf Komponenten: Atmosphäre, Hydrosphäre, Kryosphäre, Landoberfläche und Biosphäre. Das Klima eines Ortes ist von seiner Breite, seinem Gelände und seiner Höhe betroffen, ebenso wie die nahe gelegenen Wasserkörper und ihre Strömungen. Klimate können nach dem Durchschnitt und den typischen Bereichen der verschiedenen Variablen, am häufigsten Temperatur und Niederschlag klassifiziert werden. Das am häufigsten verwendete Klassifizierungsschema wurde ursprünglich von Wladimir Köppen entwickelt. Das Thornthwaite-System, das seit 1948 im Einsatz ist, beinhaltet Evapotranspiration zusammen mit Temperatur- und Niederschlagsinformationen und wird bei der Untersuchung von Tierartenvielfalt und möglichen Auswirkungen von Klimaveränderungen eingesetzt.
