Codec
Ein Codec ist ein Gerät oder Computerprogramm, das in der Lage ist, einen digitalen Datenstrom oder Signal zu codieren oder zu decodieren. Der Wortcodec ist ein Portmanteau von "Coder-Decoder" oder, weniger häufig, "Kompressor-Dekompressor". Ein Codec sollte nicht mit einem Codierungs- oder Komprimierungsformat oder Standard verwechselt werden - ein Format ist ein Dokument, eine Möglichkeit, Daten zu speichern, während ein Codec ein Programm ist, das solche Dateien lesen oder schreiben kann. In der Praxis wird jedoch "Codec" manchmal lose verwendet, um auf Formate zu verweisen. Ein Codec kodiert einen Datenstrom oder ein Signal für die Übertragung, Speicherung oder Verschlüsselung oder decodiert ihn für die Wiedergabe oder Bearbeitung. Codecs werden in Videokonferenzen, Streaming-Medien und Videobearbeitungsanwendungen verwendet. Der Analog-Digital-Wandler einer Videokamera wandelt seine analogen Signale in digitale Signale um, die dann durch einen Videokompressor zur digitalen Übertragung oder Speicherung geführt werden. Eine Empfangseinrichtung führt dann das Signal über einen Video-Dekompressor, dann einen Digital-Analog-Wandler für die analoge Anzeige. Der Begriff Codec wird auch als generischer Name für eine Videokonferenzeinheit verwendet.
