Der "Mann" des Herrn könnte unfreies geboren werden, aber die commendatio befreite ihn. Als zwei Männer in eine feudale Beziehung eintraten, wurden sie einer Zeremonie bekannt, die als Anerkennungszeremonie bekannt war. Der Zweck der Anerkennung war, eine auserwählte Person zu einem Vasallen eines Herrn zu machen. Die Vortragszeremonie besteht aus zwei Elementen, einer, der die Huldigung und den anderen einen Eid der Treue durchführt. In einigen Ländern, wie dem Königreich Sizilien, wurde die Anerkennungszeremonie als Investition bezeichnet.
