Die Krawatte ist ein Nackenband, der Vorläufer der maßgeschneiderten Krawatte und Fliege aus dem 17. Jahrhundert aus Kroatien. Ab dem Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts hat sich der Begriff Band auf jeden langgestreckten Neckcloth angewendet, der kein Ruff war. Der Ruff, ein gestärkter, gefalteter weißer Leinenstreifen, entstand früher im 16. Jahrhundert als Nacktuch, als Lätzchen oder als Serviette. Eine Band könnte entweder ein einfacher, angehängter Hemdkragen oder ein abnehmbares "fallendes Band" sein, das über den doppelten Kragen drapiert ist. Es ist möglich, dass Kekse anfangs getragen wurden, um Hemden zu verstecken, die nicht makellos sauber waren. Alternativ war es gedacht, als psychologischer Schutz des Halses während des Kampfes von Angriff durch einen Speer zu dienen.
