Die Kreuzzüge waren Militärkampagnen, die von der lateinischen römisch-katholischen Kirche während des Hochmittelalters und des Spätmittelalters sanktioniert wurden. Nach dem ersten Kreuzzug gab es einen intermittierenden 200-jährigen Kampf um die Kontrolle des Heiligen Landes, mit sechs weiteren großen Kreuzzügen und zahlreichen kleinen. Im Jahre 1291 endete der Konflikt mit dem Sturz der letzten christlichen Hochburg im Heiligen Land in Acre, nach dem das römisch-katholische Europa keine weitere kohärente Reaktion im Osten setzte.
